St. Vincent
It’s been a while since I’ve heard any good music, but I was amazed by this artist. A few weeks ago I decided to turn on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to check out who was scheduled to perform on the show as I usually do. So, he introduces an artist from Dallas by the name of St. Vincent. About 2 minutes into the performance I think to myself, “hmmmm, she looks really familiar!” I later realize that St. Vincent attended the same high school that I did, and graduated just one year after me! I’ve heard the name St. Vincent a lot, and have read about her in local newspapers, but never noticed that my former classmate had become a star. I was so excited to see someone from my hometown on the big screen that I decided to write a review.
Annie Erin Clark is a singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist who performs under the moniker St. Vincent. She attended Berklee College of Music before dropping out three years later. In retrospect, Clark said, “I think that with music school and art school, or school in any form, there has to be some system of grading and measurement. The things they can teach you are quantifiable. While all that is good and has its place, at some point you have to learn all you can and then forget everything that you learned in order to actually start making music.” Dropping out of college may have been the best decision she has ever made. She left Berklee, and created her own genre of music. When I first heard her music I thought that it was phychodelic, 80′s pop rock with a little bit of swag. It turns out that her genre of music is indie pop, alternative, math rock, art and baroque pop. Ummmm, yeah you may need a dictionary to find out what that all means, but her music sounds great! Plus, she knows how to play many different instruments.
Her debut album, Marry Me was released in 2007 , and was followed by the more successful Actor in 2009. Her third album, Strange Mercy, was released this September and I love it. I cannot stop playing Cheerleader. The track is really really dope. I have listened to each one of her albums. Listening to her style of music and that nice voice has opened me up to a new world of music AND art.
I had to introduce St. Vincent to our fans to show that there is so much talent in this world that has been pushed to the side…ignored. So just be on the look out for her because she’s about to blow! She’s been getting a lot of attention locally over the past few years, and has now been exposed to the world, thanks to Jimmy Fallon. That’s a good look! I hope that you enjoy this artist..
